How to Energize your Mind and Body Quickly

There are times when we just need to boost our energy. Frequently we will grab for a quick stimulant, coffee, chocolate etc. They have their purpose, but when used in excess we know the consequences. A simple and effective natural remedy to a sluggish system, fuzzy or disorganized mind, is the breath.

One of my favorite practices is known as the “HA” breath. When you google “HA” breath you will get a vast array of different methods for this practice. Which is great. The one I share here, is my preferred way of practicing.

The origin of this particular practice is from the yogic tradition. It is known as ‘’Hakara Kriya.” The Sanskrit root 'kri' means 'action' or 'effort.' And 'ya', is the Atman or soul. So, its literal translation is some sort of action or effort involving your transcendental Self. Kriyas that use the sound “HA” are called “Hakara Kriya’s. “HA” is the known as the solar channel, stimulating and energizing within the tradition of Hatha Yoga.

The practice is frequently portrayed in a static standing or sitting posture. Here we combine the “HA” breath with what’s been called the “Wonder Women Power Stance”. By using a courageous stance while doing the “HA” Kriyas, with a strong purposeful sound we are inspiring inner courage and strength. By doing it outside, we invite nature to witness our delight in being present.

When to do it

This practice is great in the morning as a wake up, especially if you are feeling a little sluggish. If you feel the need to clear your mind, give it a go. Especially do it if you have been sitting at a desk for a prolonged period of time. It’s also great fun to do with children as a way to boost confidence. For super charging effects, don’t hold back your vocal expression of “HA”.

‘Ha’ Breath Practice

  • Stand up straight with feet hip width apart. Arms relaxed, fingers open, face and jaw relaxed.

  • Inhale, breathing deeply through your nose, keeping the breath diaphragmatic if possible.

  • Exhale sharply, making the sound ‘HA’ loudly. Jump your feet apart. While you extend your arms forward with palms open, fingers out stretched. (Sending your Ha from your core out through your palms)

  • Inhale, breathing deeply through your nose, as you jump your feet back together.

  • Exhale sharply, making the sound ‘HA’ loudly. Jump your feet apart. While you extend your arms out to the sides with palms open, fingers out stretched. (Sending your Ha from your core out through your palms)

  • Inhale, breathing deeply through your nose, as you jump your feet back together.

  • Exhale sharply, making the sound ‘HA’ loudly. Jump your feet apart. While you extend your arms up to the sky with palms open, fingers out stretched. (Sending your Ha from your core out through your palms)

  • Inhale, breathing deeply through your nose, as you jump your feet back together.

  • This can be done slowly or briskly.
